PSZC Fall Dharma Study
The Roots of Zen:
In this class, we will examine the early history of Zen by looking at the writings, thoughts, and historical context of eleven key early Zen masters, from Bodhidharma to Linji. We will discuss these early Zen teachings not only as a historical record, but also as guides to our own practice. Students will come away with:
- An appreciation for what the most important early Zen adepts taught.
- A fuller understanding of key Zen terms.
- An understanding of the cultural context from which Zen emerged.
- Some ideas about how these teachings relate to your practice.
- A deeper connection to your sangha members.
The format will include lecture, small and large group discussion, and presentations by participants.
The class dates are: Oct 16, 23, and 30, and Nov (no class on the 6th), 13, and 20. The classes will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:30 pm in the PSZC zendo.
Text: The Roaring Stream by Nelson Foster and Jack Shoemaker. Each participant will need to purchase a copy of this book. Additional readings will be handed out.
