6:30pm – 8:30 pm: Movie Night – Departures

This Japanese film (with subtitles) is about a young cellist who loses his job and moves back to his hometown with his wife to start over. He answers a want-ad entitled, Departures, thinking it is for a travel agency, and inadvertently finds himself training as a “Nokanshi”, a professional who prepares bodies for funerals and entry into the next world.

While his wife and others despise the job, he gradually perfects the art, acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and their families. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the art of living.
